7 April – Archeology and Storyscape

An excellent briefing with Abi Morris about plans for Mottisfont’s new Storyscape display and an exploration of the Mottisfont Abbey Archeological Recording 1994/5 by the Test Valley Archeological Trust.

Tantalising details of interest to me include a pavement of encaustic tiles from 13th century, which originally formed the South Transept floor. 12 different tile designs found. They were made locally and some of the excavated tiles were used to form the floor of the summerhouse in the garden. A stone coffin found in 1836. 17 graves or possible graves located within the nave of the former monastic church. And a timber report indicating, if I have understood it correctly, that there are timbers in the present house dating from the mid 14th century.
